Dates: 9 September 2013
Location: Zurich, Switzerland
Website: http://32leav.es/perfab/
Deadline for submissions: 1 June 2013

In conjunction with the ACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp 2013)

Recently, technologies for fabricating real-world objects and products that can be designed and built directly by the end-user have decreased in costs and are increasingly common. These technologies are expected to have a great impact on society. However, there is a great need to explore many novel research challenges and issues before the idea of personal fabrication becomes truly pervasive and applicable to the wider public. Our workshop is aimed at facilitating discussion and exploration of these challenges. We encourage submissions of research papers, work-in-progress papers with interesting preliminary results, and position papers. Attendance at the workshop is not limited, as anyone may register and attend. The long-term goal is to gather a community of researchers and establish this workshop as a leading forum for research dissemination in the area.

TOPICS

We invite researchers from various disciplines (human-computer interaction, user interfaces, computer graphics, geometry modeling, visualization, computational design, fabrication, and rapid prototyping) to submit to our workshop.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- user interfaces for designing fabricatable objects
- geometric modeling tools for fabrication
- fabrication-aware analysis of 3D models
- computational design of objects that takes fabrication constraints into account
- rapid prototyping technologies that are novel and low-cost
- new materials for fabrication
- crowd sourcing for designing fabricatable objects
- representation and visualization of physically realizable objects
- simulation of physically realizable objects

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Submissions can either be notes with a maximum length of four pages, or full papers with a maximum length of eight pages (landscape formats). We encourage submissions of research papers, work-in-progress papers with interesting preliminary results that can lead to more future work, and position papers.

All submitted papers will be reviewed by at least two members of the program committee. The review process is a double blind review, so submissions must be anonymized. Submissions should not contain any proprietary or confidential information at the time of publication. Submitted papers cannot be previously published or be under simultaneous review for other conferences, journals, or workshops.

Accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library and the UbiComp 2013 conference supplemental proceedings, if at least one of the authors registers for the conference and attends the workshop to present the paper.

Key dates:

31st October 2013: Deadline for all contributions

15th December 2013: Notification of acceptance with suggestions for revision

31st January 2014: Final submissions uploaded to website

9-11th April 2014: Conference in Lancaster

Theme: Service Futures

This conference aims to explore how Service Design is contributing to ‘Service Futures’ and, by doing so, to reflect on its directions as a design field. The concept and role of services in the economy and society have come a long way since its first definitions and studies. Services have moved from being a peripheral activity in a manufacturing centred economy, to become an engine for growth and society driven innovation. This transformation has been fully recognised with a flourishing of service innovation and service research studies aimed at deepening the understanding, and supporting the development of services both as a sector and as a concept.

Service Design has followed this dynamic transformation. Starting from its initial focus on service interactions and experiences, Service Design research and practice have entered more strategic and transformational roles, engaging with issues of organisational change, system design, sustainability and social change, among others. Increasingly, Design for Services is considering ways to integrate and collaborate with other service related disciplines. Questions are also emerging on the future of this field considering the growing areas of application and the expansion of the concept of service itself.

Contributions

We invite a wide range of contributions:

- Full-length research papers (max 10 pages including references which is about 5000 words)

- Shorter research papers or case studies (max 5 pages including references which is about 2500 words)

- Workshop proposals (max 2 pages including references which is about 1000 words)

This conference welcomes contributions that reflect on the ‘Service Futures’ theme and its implication for Service Design as a field of enquiry. Four topics with related sub-questions are suggested as a possible focus: service innovation, transformative services, service logic, and service science (please find more information about the conference theme here: http://www.servdes.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/ServDes2014_Booklet_v01.pdf).

The core discipline of this conference is Design, but it is open to interdisciplinary and non-design specific contributions if they address the general aim of the conference.

Looking forward plenty of good quality submissions

Thanks

Message Publisher – University of Plymouth Press

MAPPING ECLECTICISM THROUGH PRACTICE
Communication Design and Illustration have less developed theoretical frameworks than other established academic subjects. We are inviting other visual researchers and practitioners to explore and map a potential theoretical framework, the strength of which is its eclectic nature.

This publication asks for submissions that place a piece of Communication Design and/or Illustration at the centre of the discourse. The intention is to create not only a practice focused and discursive academic publication but also to begin to map the terrain to see where, if any, areas of commonality may lie.Successful Communication Design and Illustration often requires creative alignments and engagements across an eclectic range of disciplines, processes, methodologies, media, ideas and cultural contexts.

Whilst the last decade or so has seen Design establish itself as a credible and coherent academic discipline, could it be argued that this progression has led to an emphasis on, and validation of, the method/process rather than the outcome/solution? Within an academic context, Communication Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Visual Communication et al (the diversity of nomenclature does suggest an ambiguity of identity and coherence), appear to be still in the process of mapping and establishing their theoretical frameworks, methodologies, processes, nomenclature and terminology.

Communication Design, Graphic Design and Illustration often craft tangible, novel, inventive, provocative, interactive, decorative, useful, behaviour-changing artefacts or solutions. These may be imbued with personal perspectives and agendas of their creators and/or commissioners. These may vary from financial to philanthropic; from sustainability to self-expression; from educational to entertainment and from social responsibility to self-aggrandisement. Should we embrace all of these perspectives and agendas because they may lead to new insights, possibilities, knowledge and applications?

The complex mesh of motives, the permeable boundaries of roles, plus the impact of technology, have made it problematic for Communication Designers and Illustrators to develop coherent theoretical frameworks distinct from disciplines such as Advertising, Art & Design History, Design, Drawing, Media, Narrative, Painting, Photography and Semiotics. Indeed due to their nature, is it necessary for Communication Designers and Illustrators to define themselves as a separate “academic discipline” or indeed align themselves at all?

Background
Message is a peer-reviewed academic journal that consists of blind reviewed academic papers plus one to three commissioned essays/articles. It is dedicated to the development and discussion of contemporary Visual Communication research particularly within Art & Design with an emphasis on Practice, Outputs and Artefacts.

The aim of the Message journal is to explore and expand the boundaries of Visual Communication within Art & Design through an experimental and developmental ethos, challenging the practitioner, the development and use of technology, as well as questioning Visual Communication values and social, ethical and sustainable practices.

The Message journal welcomes contributions from national and international Visual Communication researchers and practitioners from a variety of perspectives – theoretical, conceptual, educational, industrial.

The Message journal has been initiated by the Message research group at Plymouth University. The group’s research focuses on the areas of graphic design, illustration and visual communication. The Plymouth University Message journal and research group is committed to enhancing the development of these subject areas, both in education and commercial design, through research and enterprise.

Message is proud to be at the forefront of this by recently hosting the VaroomLab symposium ‘Boundaries, Illustration-Practice-Research’ at the Plymouth International Book Festival 2012..The event explored how new technologies, concepts and professional issues are encouraging innovation, shaping the subject and pushing the illustration community to practise in new ways. In addition to the symposium was a touring ‘Boundaries, Illustration-Practice-Research’ exhibition and published book ‘Making great illustration’ by Jo Davies.

Message is involved in The Second International Symposium on Augmented Reality Visualisation and Art, part of the 17th International Conference on Information Visualisation, iV2013, July 2013, London, UK, plus the ICCI 360 immersive multimedia environment, Conference, ‘Time around Space’ June 2013, Plymouth UK.

It is also actively engaged in the development of the Plymouth Design Festival in 2015 and is holding a 2013 symposium with a focus on design underpinned by research.

Email: v.squire@plymouth.ac.uk
Receipt of your submission will be made within 5 working days

Style guide

Dates

The 1990s rather than the ‘90s

Quotes

Use double quotation marks around a quote. If the quote is from an interview conducted by the writer it’s better to break it up, by inserting, he/she ‘says’, ‘reflects’, ‘continues’ etc. But also, paraphrase is very helpful in keeping the reader engaged, and looks less forbidding than a large indented block quote.

Names

Use italics for a book, film, work of art, etc.

Numerals
Numbers spelled out from One to Nine, for 10 and over we use numerals.

Please note: Submissions must follow Harvard system of referencing.

Peer-review
Papers and reports selected by the Editors will be peer-reviewed by international professionals and scholars – all material will be “blind” read and commented by, at least, two reviewers.

The peer-review of each paper or report, will concentrate on whether the research paper or report is sufficiently well conceived, has potential to be well executed, and is appropriate to be included in Message.

Reviewers will be invited to consider submitted papers and reports within their expertise.

Each submission will be reviewed against clear editorial criteria. Feedback will be provided.

After consideration by the Message editorial team a decision will be sent to the author within a specified timeframe.

Editors will respond to authors according to the following
- accepted without revision
- accepted with minor revision
- rejected

It is essential that all authors finally provide a thoroughly proofread and checked manuscript along with images in the specified format with proof of permissions.

Selection of peer–reviewers
The Message editorial board will in the first instance identify appropriate reviewers for a particular paper or report. Reviewers will be chosen according to factors including their expertise, reputation and knowledge. We intend to build a database of academic expertise around relevant subject areas.

As part of our editorial procedure, the Message team will brief potential reviewers before sending them papers and reports to review and all correspondence will be treated confidentially. Reviewers will remain anonymous during the peer-review process and impartiality will be our aim.

Feedback

All comments from reviewers to the editors will be treated confidentially.

A good review would answer the following questions:

What are the main aims of the paper/report?

Are the aims of the piece well situated in the context of any other known research around the subject?

Who would find this paper of interest? And why?

In what further directions would it be useful to take the current research?

Confidentiality

The review process will be seen as confidential by the Message editorial board and reviewers. As the author may have chosen to exclude some people from this process, the reviewer should not discuss nor consult other colleagues or experts about the review unless this has been agreed with the Message editorial team. Where appropriate we will request any feedback that might help to strengthen the paper or report to send to the author.

The Message editors may edit comments made by reviewers. In their comments to authors, reviewers are encouraged to be honest but not offensive in their language.

It will be the responsibility of the Message editorial team to send the decision to the author with any reviewers’ comments.

Final publishing decisions are made by the Message editorial team. In the event that these are different from the reviewer’s recommendations this will have been the result of a robust process of consideration. Authors of printed contributions will receive three copies of the relevant Message issue.

ABOUT UNDESIGN

Undesign is calling for submissions from researcher, curators, theorists as well as practicing designers and artists, for an edited text to be published in late 2014 – early 2015.

Traditionally, design has been placed in a framework that emphasizes its utility over aesthetic or other non-functional considerations. UnDesign seeks to document new developments in design that connect with science, engineering, biotechnology and hactivism, which operate at the intersection of art and design. Often confounding and speculative, these practices exist outside mainstream commercial design and share many traits with contemporary art. “Undesigning” practices aim to undo the complex designed world by revealing how human designing implicitly structures our world.

UnDesign will examine the ideas, speculations and practices that constitute this burgeoning new field of practice that unravels design’s traditional definitions and assumptions in order to develop a very different concept of design practice in the 21st century. The publication aims to combine essays with the presentation of significant works of art and design. It will focus on practices that:

occur at the intersection of art and design;

engage with “our” contemporary real/digital “life world” in a critical manner;

operate as provocative interventions within design thinking and the design environment;

combine practice and research as well as text, action and object;

have redirective design intentions.

“Design must put in doubt its search for all such often well-intentioned design solutions or self-deconstructions, to open the way to explore, discover, uncover, and expose the hidden dimensions of lived experience.” Krysztof Wodiczko, Critical Vehicles: Writings, Projects and Interviews, Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press,1999

SUBMISSIONS DUE 31st of MAY 2013

UnDesign is calling for submission from researchers, curators, theorists as well as practicing designers and artists. Submissions should address the outline above and respond to the following thematic:

‣ Genealogical explorations: Speculative Futures and Alternate Pasts—directions and untold histories that situate critical art/design in a lineage of practice, explaining the conditions that have led to current Undesign practices.

‣ Deconstructive, reordering and redirective readings—expositions of the current condition of design outlining the significance of critical art/design approaches.

‣ Disruptive, strange and redirective experiences—writings as well as speculative, critical design and artistic projects.

The first part in this process is that we are inviting abstracts of 100-200 words detailing your proposed contribution. All abstracts will be reviewed and selected authors will be invited to submit full chapters. Inclusion in the final published text will be based on outcomes of an academic peer review process.

Editors: Dr Gavin Sade, Dr Gretchen Coombs, Dr Andrew

Please submit abstracts by the 31st of May 2013 either via email to: submissions@undesign.net.au, or by using the web form at the following URL: http://undesign.net.au/abstract-submission/

Date: 3 September 2013
Deadline for submission: UPDATED 19 May 2013

Growing food presents diverse challenges and opportunities within the urban environment. As cities develop, population density rises, land prices rise, and the opportunity to use land for traditional farming and gardening diminishes. Counter to this trend there are a growing number of both community gardens, city farms, ‘guerilla gardening’, effective use of rooftop gardens, pot plants, windowsill herbs and backyard gardens cropping up in different cities, all with a purpose to produce local food, supplemented in part by food co-op organisations. This workshop brings together practitioners and researchers in the field of urban agriculture and HCI to explore the different forms of growing practice and the sustainable impact of locally grown produce.

TOPIC

There is a growing interest in exploring design opportunities for urban agriculture in the domain of HCI. Until now the focus has typically been on the more general food and technology experience, where this workshop hopes to move forward the domain of the specifics of growing food and growing communities. The area of urban agriculture presents challenges and opportunities in space and place, safeguards for public health, and environmental stress. Technology has many opportunities to play in the different aspects of growing, and HCI innovations are well positioned to understand and respond to the challenges of the environment in which people grow food.

PARTICIPATION

We invite position papers up to four pages in Springer LNCS format that address one of the three themes described below. Submissions outside these areas will be considered depending on their relevant contribution to the fields of urban agriculture, HCI, and design.

Individual Growth – Focused on the scale of an individual or household, gardening and food production is often limited to a backyard or windowsill. Individuals and households may engage with different information sources or communities to learn and understand the practice of urban agriculture, but they may lack the ability to distinguish the quality of the information sources.

Communities – Urban agriculture often relies upon cooperation. In many cases with city farms or community gardens there is a dependence on volunteer participation, and resources are often very limited. This provides a challenge for urban designers and technologists to contribute to the resilience of these urban agriculture communities, and support the longevity of their practice. Additionally, it provides a challenge to service designers to help setting and organizing the communities that manage the gardens.

Environmental Sustainability – Food miles present a significant environmental issue. While large scale remote farming has some advantages, food subject to traveling large distances, time in transit and multiple levels of processing and packaging, may suffer from reduced freshness, reduced vitality and lack of local variation. Local growing and gardening encourages more plant life within urban boundaries, and represents an effective use of available space. As local growing serves to remove dependency on crops grown elsewhere, it provides a level of food security to the urbanites.

SUBMISSION

We invite position papers up to four pages in Springer LNCS format.
Please send your submissions to workshop chairs Peter Lyle (p.lyle@qut.edu.au) and Jaz Hee-jeong Choi (h.choi@qut.edu.au) by May 12th.

Authors will be notified of acceptance by May 22nd.

Accepted submissions will be published on the workshop’s webpage (http://www.urbaninformatics.net/resources/interact2013cfp/).
In addition we are reviewing options for a special issue on the topic of Urban Agriculture and HCI (to be discussed at the workshop).

Deadline for application: 15 May 2013

Are you interested in participatory design and do you work with users with impairments? We organize a workshop on participatory design for persons with cognitive or sensory impairments at Interact 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa. This workshop will be held on Tuesday September 3rd.

Workshop on participatory design for users with impairments

Involving people with impairments in the design process is very challenging, especially when impairments affect cognitive functions or communication. People with such impairments may have substantial problems with thought processes and communication, including understanding abstractions, sequencing thoughts and actions, understanding symbols, and interpreting social cues. Many participatory design techniques are based on these processes and are therefore not usable, or need to be adjusted for people with impairments.

Workshop aims

This workshop aims to exchange experiences with participatory design techniques that were designed for, or adapted to people with impairments. Since many of these techniques are highly focused on specific target groups, a further aim is to extract general principles and to generate guidelines for involving users with impairments in the design process.

Who should attend?

Researchers and designers who have been involved in one or more design-oriented project(s) involving users with impairments are invited to participate. After this workshop, a call for papers will be launched for a special issue (on the topic of the workshop) of the journal CoDesign.

Important dates

May 15: application deadline
May 24: notification of acceptance
September 3: workshop date
September 4 to 6: Interact main conference

Deadline for submissions: 6 May 2013

Session chair: Carma Gorman, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, carmagorman@gmail.com.

Product designers, graphic designers, and fashion designers all work within the constraints of a constellation of state, national, and international laws and standards governing patents, trademarks, copyrights, copylefts, licensing, product configurations, color specifications, rules of origin, trade agreements, labor conditions, liability, accessibility, environmental protection, and so on. Although legal scholars have written extensively on these issues, relatively few humanistic scholars of design (among them Lawrence Busch, Howell John Harris, Sarah S. Lochlann Jain, Otakar Macel, Frederic J. Schwartz, and T’ai Smith) have examined how laws and standards have shaped manufacturers’, clients’, and designers’ decision-making and creative processes, and, in turn, how these groups’ practices have reshaped the law. This session therefore seeks papers that address the ways in which laws and standards have shaped or constrained the manufacture, configuration, or circulation of consumer products, graphics, and garments (or vice versa), either in the past or present. Both traditional scholarly analyses and first-person “constraint narratives” by designers are welcome.

To submit an abstract for consideration, please follow the instructions in the CAA “General Guidelines for Speakers” (available at http://www.collegeart.org/pdf/2014CallforParticipation.pdf). Please send your preliminary abstract of one to two double-spaced, typed pages; a brief letter explaining your interest/expertise in the topic and your CAA membership status; a CV with contact information; and your completed session participation proposal form (available on the last page of http://www.collegeart.org/pdf/2014CallforParticipation.pdf) to carmagorman@gmail.com) by MAY 6, 2013 to carmagorman@gmail.com.

Special Issue Theme: Perspectives on participatory HCI research: Beginnings, middles and endings
Website: http://di.ncl.ac.uk/participation/special-issue/
Deadline for submissions: 31 July 2013

Participation is a research area of sustained interest to the HCI community. Traditionally, the term has been used to suggest a democratized approach to the design of technology that calls for end-user involvement in the design process. This may vary from researchers inviting specific users or stakeholders to participate in design workshops, through to long term engagements with communities to define research questions and study deployments of new technologies. As HCI is an interdisciplinary field, however, there are multiple understandings of what participation in research might mean, from subjects and disciplines such as social science, participatory and performance arts, international development, and action research. Beyond these influences, there is also increased pressure from funding bodies and public institutions to involve a wider spectrum of the public in academic research. The convergence of these factors has drawn attention to the potential benefits and challenges, both theoretical and practical of involving users and the public in HCI research.

While user, citizen or stakeholder participation in design processes can offer great insight into the applicability of technological interventions in certain contexts, the HCI community would benefit from critically reflecting on how participation is planned, managed, and sustained. The mundane yet still significant details of how participatory HCI research is performed are rarely documented and discussed by the community. The coming together of multiple perspectives from different disciplines some of which have existing frameworks, some debate the very notion of participation provides an opportunity for HCI researchers to reflect critically on how people are involved in design processes. Specifically, we call attention to the following three phases of performing participatory HCI research:

How we begin:
How do researchers establish relationships with communities, participants, or users and stakeholders prior to commencing participatory research? Who here determines the research context and the setting it takes place in, or what research questions are formed? Furthermore, what agendas, skills and assumptions do researchers bring to a participatory project? Why are certain participants selected or invited to take part over others?

How we reflex and reflect:
How do researchers reflect upon and manage the complicated processes of participation and engagement while working with groups or communities? How are researchers and participants given space to document and reflect upon the activities they perform and how does this inform the research or design process throughout? How do we understand our practice when busy doing it and can we develop strategies to elicit generative reflections on practice as it is enacted? Furthermore, is it possible to document participatory work along the way without skewing the process itself?

How we end:
How do researchers determine whether deployments or interventions should be sustained beyond the formal completion of research, and what are the practical challenges of leaving a legacy of a participatory project? Is sustainability or legacy always positive outcome of participatory research, and are there ways of empirically understanding transformations within a context beyond the uptake or success of a specific technology or intervention?

Topics

This special issue aims to present a set of high quality, thought provoking, original research articles that address one or more of these stages through topics including, but not limited to:

– Empirical studies collaborating with organizations and communities in the design or evaluation of new technologies.
– Studies of participatory HCI that target specific populations or communities, such as older people, young people, activist groups, charities, rural communities, among others.
– Theoretical and conceptual frameworks that unpack the questions and related problems of participation as a process.
– Critical reflections on existing and historical examples of participation in HCI.
– Strategies for documenting and eliciting reflection from both researchers and participants engaged in research.
– Considerations of the ethical, moral and political implications of designing technologies with communities of users and stakeholders.
– Interdisciplinary perspectives on participatory HCI research.
– Case studies discussing experiences of beginning, reflecting on or sustaining participatory HCI research.

It is anticipated that submissions will tackle at least one stage of participatory research/design processes in use, as described above, and that accepted papers will comprise examples from each phase. Papers addressing theoretical issues will only be considered where the contribution is exceptional.

Paper submission

Authors are requested to contact the guest editors (email: participation.di@gmail.com) prior to making a submission by July 31st 2013 to inform them of their plans to submit to the special issue.
‘Good Things and Bad Things’

Symposium in Nottingham on 10th/ 11th June 2013.

The programme will bring together a range of approaches to the ‘rights and wrongs’ of designs, designers and designing, hearing perspectives from Design (Jana Scholze, Victoria and Albert Museum), Sociology (Tim Dant, University of Lancaster), Social Anthropology (Mike Anusas, U of Strathclyde), Art (Gene-George Earlé), Design History (Ralph Mills, MMU), among others.

The good/ bad things in question include guns, things in questionable taste, immaterial things, sportified things, criminal things… among others.

We intend to start discussion about these as crossing points between ideas of virtue, propriety, moral conduct and the agency of material and immaterial objects. This will connect both with debates from object orientated philosophy, and about designs as manifestations of social and cultural practices.

‘Good Things’ is Hosted by Nottingham Contemporary, to coincide with the exhibition ‘The Universal Addressability of Dumb Things’ curated by Mark Leckey and is a collaboration between the Design Research Society OPENSiG (objects, practices, experiences, networks), Nottingham Trent University, the Design against Crime Research Centre at Central St. Martins and Nottingham Contemporary.

Dates: 7-9 November 2013
Location: National College of Art and Design, Dublin, Ireland
Website: www.cumulusdublin.com
Deadline for submission of abstracts: 31 May 2013

Today’s global recession forces design practice, research and education to address a number of questions:

Consumption – How can design find a balance between excess and austerity

Growth – How can design stimulate sustainable economic growth?

Research – Is design research and development a luxury we can still afford?

Education – How can we change pedagogical content and delivery methods to become more efficient while maintaining standards?

Environments – How can we use design to create places and spaces for renewal and growth?

Wellbeing – How can design improve our wellbeing and welfare in the face of public sector cuts and financial hardship?

Communities – How can design bring local communities together to work on projects that improve how we live, work and play?

We propose that in the deepest recession since the great depression of the 1930s we need to turn the modernist mantra ‘less is more’ on its head as the reduced budgets of governments, business and people demand ‘more for less’, and develop a ‘New Deal’ for design.

Vibrant economies are built on innovation, but with this comes an ethical responsibility that Design, the engine of the previous decades unsustainable consumerism and excess needs to address. This conference hopes to stimulate discussion on how design researchers, practitioners and educators can respond to today’s fiscal constraints, and stimulate growth and renewal in our economy, culture and society. After all you can’t impose austerity on the imagination!

This international conference is intended to act as platform for sharing ideas and concepts about contemporary design research in this age of austerity. Contributors are invited to submit research that addresses contemporary approaches to design research. The conference is open to research through, for and into design.

The conference will consist of keynote talks, paper presentations, poster exhibition and curated gallery exhibition. The conference coincides with Dublin Design Week 4 – 10 November 2013, a celebration of design including walks, talks, launches, exhibitions and workshops. The festival’s audience includes the designers who design things, the business community who purchase design services and most importantly, the public who are the end users of all designers’ services.

We invite submissions of abstracts for papers and posters that relate to the themes of the conference.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Authors are invited to submit an abstract of up to 400 words.

Abstracts can be submitted using the downloadable template via e-mail to cumulus2013@ncad.ie.

The deadline for abstract submission is Friday the 31st of May.

The abstract text should be submitted in English using the conference template, and will not be accepted if submitted in any other format.

All abstracts submitted will be double blind peer reviewed by the conference’s Review Panel, who will provide feedback where necessary.

The conference welcomes papers that discuss both work-in-progress projects as well as finished work. Papers are required to demonstrate originality and, irrespective of the range and stage of your research, the conference organisers expect the highest standards of scholarship in terms of establishing context, explicating the methods of inquiry, and reporting results that may aid other researchers or creative practitioners. We especially welcome early career researchers and PhD candidates.

Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to present full papers at the conference, with the abstracts published in printed and digital form at the event.

All paper presentations will last 20 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of questions.

Please note that each person can only submit one conference paper as main author. In the case of several papers submitted by a group of co-authors, a different ‘primary author’ must register for each paper.

A selection of authors will subsequently be invited to submit their full papers – between 3000-5000 words – for review and inclusion in a published book, edited by the conference chair and team, for publication in early 2014.

Submissions details and templates are downloadable from www.cumulusdublin.com

CALL FOR POSTERS

We also invite submissions of posters that relate to the themes of conference ‘More for Less – Creativity in an Age of Austerity’.

The Cumulus Dublin 2013 fly poster exhibition aims at communicating knowledge of both research and practice to the conference community and City as a whole. Designers, academics and researchers will be able to present their work to delegates during the conference.

Accepted posters will be printed by NCAD and fly posted over the conference venue, feature in the conference publication and online archive. Submissions will be reviewed by the conference team to ensure a high quality of publication. We especially welcome early career researchers and PhD candidates with work in progress.

Posters should be A1 in size, at 300 dpi. They should be submitted electronically and will be printed by the Conference team at NCAD.

Submissions details and templates are downloadable from www.cumulusdublin.com

The deadline for submitting an intention to produce a Poster is Friday 31st of May 2013.

Final Posters must be submitted for printing by Friday 27th September 2013.

Deadline for submissions: 24 June 2013

The Journal of Learning Design is an open-access multidisciplinary forum concerned with innovative technology and pedagogy in higher education.

Provocation and Call for Papers:
In relation to architectural pedagogy, Beatriz Colimina writes that it “…has become stale. Schools spin old wheels as if something is happening but so little is going on. Students wait for a sense of activist engagement with a rapidly evolving world but graduate before it happens…There is no real innovation” (AR The Architectural Review, 28th September, 2012). While Beatriz is talking specifically about architectural education, could the same be said of design education across the design disciplines? Assuming this is the case, this special edition calls for submissions that regard technology and the increasing demand to integrate technology in design teaching in higher education as a catalyst for radically questioning and challenging existing design curricula, pedagogy and learning and teaching environments. In this regard it invites a broadening of how we conceptualise and regard technology to one that encompasses the wider professional, social, environmental and pedagogical context in which it is situated, and the possibility for fundamental and innovative changes in the way teachers teach design and students learn design.

The journal invites submissions from but is not limited to the following design domains:

- Architecture
- Digital Media
- Exhibition and Display Design
- Fashion Design
- Furniture Design
- Graphic Design
- Industrial Design
- Interactive Design
- Interior Architecture
- Interior Design
- Jewellery Design
- Landscape Architecture
- Spatial Design
- Textile Design
- TV, Film and Set Design
- Urban Design
- Visual Design

Potential Paper Topics:
Potential topics of interest for the special issue include:

- The relationship between the content of design learning, approaches to design teaching and technological innovation in practice
- The potential for new technologies such as social media to invite reconsideration of established teaching and learning approaches and environments such as the design studio
- The roles and qualities of teachers and students and successful technology integration
- The application of ‘Edupunk’ or DIY attitudes to design thinking and learning, as a reaction to the mainstream commercialisation of learning, through pre-defined technologies such as PowerPoint or Blackboard
- The appropriateness of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCS) in the context of design learning
- Creativity, technology and activism
- The linkages between space, place and design learning [including social, informal, blended, virtual, hybrid, workplace and off-campus learning environments]

Design Cases:
In addition to full-length papers, we also invite short illustrated papers of 3-4,000 words of design cases that reflect the special issue theme and represent technologically innovative, pedagogically radical examples of learning environments in higher education or of relevance to higher education.

Dates: 9-11 October 2013
Location: Oslo School of Architecture & Design
Website: http://www.systemic-design.net
Deadline for submissions: 1 May 2013

Relating Systems Thinking and Design is a free and open symposium over two days with a preceeding full day with diverse workshops and a subsequent special issue in FORMakademisk. We encourage you to submit your abstracts and to concider joining the workshops. We are interrested in both work in progress and more developed contributions.
9th October: Workshops
1oth – 11th October: Symposium

Call for abstracts
The emerging renaissance of systems thinking in design responds to the increasing complexity in all challenges faced by designers and transdisciplinary innovators. Our worlds have become too complex for linear and goal-driven management, resulting in hopelessly complicated social, economic, and political systems. The global demand for sustainability, democratic economies, and the emerging social arrangements for better education, employment, and development have become too complex for conventional thinking.

The interrelationship between systems thinking and design action was the theme of last years RSD seminar at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. In re-examining the relationship of systems thinking to design we believe it possible for systems thinking and design praxis to develop the foundations for new, interrelated practices. This synergistic relationship will launch a new generation of systems-oriented thinkers empowered with the creativity and perspectives of design thinking. As educators and researchers, we also seek better theoretical foundations and rigor in design thinking.

We areare interested in proposals that draw from recent case studies from fieldwork, design inquiry and research, and mixed methods in systems-oriented design.

Sociotechnical, service, and activity systems are characterized by highly complex and emergent human-system relationships, and benefit from nonlinear and creative design practices and engaged research perspectives. Design practices found effective in fields such as healthcare, governance, environmental stewardship, organizational management and social change, are of particular interest for cases and discussion in the conference.

Systemic Design has been suggested as a term for this emerging movement in design with its multiple expressions including e.g. Systems Oriented Design, Whole Systems Design, and is closely related to Dialogic Design. What binds systems related theories and practices together with design approaches may be the desire to reintroduce systems approaches with design toward a more effective integrated praxis, becoming more useful to designers (and stakeholders and clients) than evidenced by past performance. This implies the reshaping and design of systems approaches and the related practices so that they are better integrated into design processes.

We invite you to submit an abstract of maximum 1000 words within the following themes:

•New systemic practices in design
•Rethinking systems approaches from a design perspective
•Relating Design Praxis and Systems Thinking
•The role of systemic design when developing design practices in new areas
•Teaching (systemic design or), systems thinking in design. (or design in systems approaches)
•Relating systems and design theories, conceptually and pragmatically

Accepted abstracts will be asked to submit a presentation.

The best presentations will after the symposium be invited by the program committee to submit a full paper to be published in a planned special issue in the Norwegian bilingual scientific design research journal FORMakademisk. These papers will go through a blind peer review evaluation process as normal for this journal. See the journal website for details.

Dates: 27-30 June 2013
Location: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Architecture
Website: http://www.theodessey.org/
Deadline for submission of expressions of interest: 15 April 2013

Following the 1st Hothouse in Brisbane (July 2011) and the 2nd Hothouse in Paris (July 2012), Hothouse 3 aims to liberate thinking and initiate projects that inquire upon, and even begin to reverse, the conditions and principles through which Greece exists in a state of crisis. The intent of ‘Hothouse’ 3 is to bring together a dynamic collection of people from Greece and around the world in order to confront these issues in a structured way; this conversation will be grounded in the identification and elaboration of local agendas, aiming to think and initiate specific projects from which beginnings and directions can grow.

This is an Urmadic University project. Each year the Hothouse moves progressively according to its context: Hothouse 3 is different in the fact that instead of talking about problems to be faced, it is actually situated in a problem.

Expressions of interest to participate in the event are invited from:

1. Disenfranchised Greek intellectuals/designers of all ages disenchanted by the current local status quo, interested in new thinking and critical practices (limited to 20 places)
2. Members of the Urmadic University Network (limited to 20 places)

Place numbers are open to revision (based on the volume of expressions received/selection). The event will be conducted in English.

Further information on the previous Hothouses and the Urmadic University can be found at http://www.theodessey.org/

Context

Greece is in a state of ‘crisis’. This ‘crisis’ can be presented as a narrative; yet, it is a narrative with an actual impact on people’s lives, as it is also an undisputable state of being for a significant number of Greeks, covering the widest spectrum of society as well as manifesting the widest variety of concerns. This problem is presented at once as local (as ‘Greek’), as well as global in its affinity to concerns over the intertwined effects of unsustainable policies on a significant number of countries, and people all over the world.

At the same time, Greece is historically unique. It is Europe. And Balkans. And East. And West. A territory that keeps shifting its borders in all directions – this over the past 2500 years. And currently it seems to be nowhere. Here is a country with a history that has formed the histories of other nations and that has been reformed by exclusion and demarcation. A culture carrying a philosophical tradition that created the problem of western metaphysics, globalism and colonialism, currently being the victim of its own creation. Above all, Greece is an exemplary society facing a conceded collapse.

Yet in the moment of an ending a beginning demands to be faced. This situation can be addressed to in numerous ways – economically, culturally, existentially and so on. But, as we stated earlier, it is equally a felt concern for many other people globally as the plight of the nation is understood as symptomatic of far wider problems at the end of modernity, such as the complete loss of credibility of evolutionary and emancipatory narratives including ‘development’, ‘progress’, and ‘sustainability’. What the recent history of Greece exposes is that while the powerful and the privileged will continually strive to retain their power and privileges, they are fundamentally failing to deal with the issues that are deciding the fate of humanity (and much else): planetary destruction, a climate heading toward, perhaps already in, chaos and an ever growing volume of displaced people worldwide; increasing the spread and growth of asymmetrical warfare as a feature of latemodern life.

About the Hothouse

The intent of ‘Hothouse’ 3 is to bring together a dynamic collection of people from Greece and around the world in order to confront these issues in a structured way; this conversation will be grounded in the identification and elaboration of local agendas.

The event cannot simply be an interesting discussion or a search for a savoir. Rather its ambition has to liberate thinking that is able to begin reversing those principles linked to a Eurocentric model of making the world that is now embedded in globalism, and in so doing think and initiate specific projects from which beginnings and directions can grow. In that sense it is important for the participants to be prepared to immerse themselves in the context of the ‘Hothouse’ rather than carry along with them pre-structured and rigid positions.

The ‘Hothouse’ will take place as an intensive four-day event. The first day of the event will require briefings and dialogue; the focus of the second day will be on project ideas, evaluation and selection; and, the remaining two days will focus on project development and presentations. This is an Urmadic University project. Each year the Hothouse moves progressively according to its context (year one was in Brisbane, year two in Paris). Hothouse 3 is different in the fact that instead of talking about problems to be faced, it is actually situated in a problem. Further information on the previous Hothouses and the Urmadic University can be found at http://www.theodessey.org/

Dates: 23 Aug – 1 Sept 2013
Location: Split, Croatia.
Website: www.urbanixd.eu
Application deadline: Monday 15 April, 2013

The UrbanIxD Summer School will be grounded in the emerging discipline of urban interaction design. The Summer School will address the domain of technologically augmented, data-rich urban environments, with a particular emphasis on human activities, experiences and behaviours.

Theme of the Summer School
Explosive innovation and adoption of computing, mobile devices, and rich sources of data are changing the cities in which we live, work, and play. It’s about us, and how computing in the context of our cities is changing how we live. The urban spaces of the future will be saturated with both visible and hidden media that gather and transmit information. How we as physical beings connect with, interpret and shape the increase of data residing in our environment will be a significant challenge.

The UrbanIxD Summer School will explore our relationship with data in the Networked City of the near future. The approach will focus on human interactions and how these might change and develop and thereby impact on the development of cities. The output of the Summer School will provide the opportunity to rethink what intelligent connected communities of the future might actually look like.

Format of the Summer School
The Summer School will be an 8-day interdisciplinary, workshop-style event hosted by the Department of Visual Communications Design, Arts Academy, University of Split. Croatia.

International speakers will address the theme of Human Interactions in the Networked City, from different perspectives. However the focus of the Summer School is on activity, and participants will spend most of their time working in Atelier groups. These groups will be led by experienced practitioners and researchers and will consider the theme of the Summer School from different viewpoints.

The Summer School will conclude with a public showcase of the outputs of the Atelier groups and this work will contribute to the future research of the UrbanIxD project.

Participation in the Summer School
Participants will be selected through an Open Call, and anyone is welcome to apply – all applications will be considered on their individual merits.

Participants will be selected to achieve a good balance within the atelier groups, so that everyone has the best possible experience of interdisciplinary work. The School is particularly aimed at three main groups of participants:

• Students, particularly postgraduate or research student
• Researchers and academics with up to five years working experience
• Working practitioners with up to five years working experience
In the domains of Design, Interaction Design, Architecture, Urban Design & Planning, New Media Art, Technology, Sociology, Anthropology and other related disciplines.

Participants who successfully complete the school will be awarded 1.5 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System)

Costs and Practicalities

Registration for successful applicants will be €100.00. This subsidised fee includes 9 nights accommodation in Split and most meals, as well as the Summer School. Participants must make their own travel arrangements to Split.

Application Details

Application deadline: Monday 15 April, 2013 and Notification by Monday 29 April, 2013.
To apply complete the online application form from the UrbanIxD website: http://urbanixd.eu/summer-school

Background to Urban Interaction Design

Cites have always raised particular issues for technologists and researchers. But today, more so than ever, a transformation is taking place in how our cities work. Cities are being laced with sensors, which in turn generate urban informatics experiences, imbuing physical space with real-time behavioural data. A digital landscape overlays our physical world and is expanding to offer ever-richer experiences. In the cities of the future, computing isn’t just with us; it surrounds us, and it uses the context of our environment to empower us in more natural, yet powerful ways.

The vision of Ubicomp is currently being manifest in Pervasive Computing, and the Internet of Things, but rather than casting the human at the centre of this vision, today’s citizens appear to be engaged either as consumers or nodes in the vast network that comprises the city. What is clear is that the urban fabric itself is becoming increasingly reflexive and responsive, and this in turn has numerous implications for the design and experience of cities as a result.

UrbanIxD: Designing Human Interactions in the Networked City
A Coordination Action project funded by the European Commission under FP7 Future and Emerging Technologies (FET Open). 2013 – 2014 Project Number: 323687
