2nd Intl Forum of Design as a Process (Oct 2010, Portugal)

Deadline for abstracts: 30 April 2010.
Website: http://www.latin-design-process.net/.

One of the dominant characteristics of design in Latin countries is the subtle difference and the frequent superimposition between knowledge and practices of design, fine arts and craft. For example, there are recurrent occasions in which artists are called by companies to substitute designers and designers are involved by craftsmen to update and revitalize their practices.

The 2nd International Forum of the Latin Network will bring the process dimension of this integration to the fore. In one hand, we take for granted the knowledge typical of each area of interest, but, on the other hand, we would like to address our shared idea to the scientific and operative fields in which these three activities overlap, growing mutually and taking possession of one another’s consolidated practices.

Firstly, we imagine that this overlapping of knowledge and practices is frequently constructive for design; secondly, we suppose that the sharing of experiences purposely dedicated to throwing light upon problems and solutions of this integration, represents a timely issue for our assembly.

We think that these three fields of interest (design, fine arts and craft) have to be autonomous as disciplines, but we are interested in verifying their proximity, integration, “positive” chance of confusion and innovative energy. Thus, we would like to explore this issue giving a particular role to the interdisciplinary integration which rides innovation and culminates in innovation.

About Fil Salustri
I'm a design methodologist and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada. Adjectives that describe me include: secular humanist, meritocrat, and long-winded. Some people call me a positivist too, as if that were a bad thing. Go figure. My real home page is http://deseng.ryerson.ca/~fil.
