Studies in Material Thinking Special Issue on Research Outputs in Art and Design (Aug 2011)

Call for papers: Studies in Material Thinking Journal
Theme: Research Outputs in Art and Design
Abstract deadline: UPDATED 29th August, 2011
Contact: Dr. Alan Young:

This issue of Studies in Material Thinking is devoted to the critique, not only in writing but also through the forms themselves, of the notions of research in, and through art and graphic / communication design practice.  The discourses of art and design are vibrant and constantly shifting, negotiated terrains, where new technologies provide opportunities and avenues to explore and re-shape the boundaries of the discourses. We encourage non-traditional as well as traditional media forms that can be uploaded to a revamped web presence of the journal. As well as standard text and image documents, the new site will be able to present contributions through sound, moving image and interactive works.

Editor, Dr. Panos Papalambros at

Submission deadline: 15 January 2012

Uncertainty is ubiquitous in engineering design. There are theoretical and computational challenges associated with many aspects of design under uncertainty. While various approaches exist, some are ad-hoc in nature. It is therefore imperative to develop theoretically sound, self-consistent, and computationally efficient methods to support design under uncertainty. Consequently, the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design calls for submissions for a special issue on Design under Uncertainty.

2nd Intl Conf on Design Creativity (Sep 2012, Glasgow)

Location: Glasgow, UK
Dates: 18-20 September 2012
Deadline for papers: 9 March 2012

Design Creativity is an important and interesting topic of study in design. Since it involves the profound and essential nature of design, design creativity is expected to be a key in not only addressing the social problems that we are facing, but also producing an innate appreciation for beauty and happiness in our minds. In order to elucidate the nature of design creativity, the following issues are being studied: cognitive processes underlying design creativity, computational models of design creativity, and practical processes to incorporate the human and social dimensions.

The 2nd ICDC will provide a forum to discuss the nature and potential of design creativity from both theoretical and methodological viewpoints. It will include panel discussions on the ‘directions for design creativity research’. The aim of these discussions is to develop directions for future research on design creativity.
