Chapter Proposals for Heritage as a path to innovation: a reflection on European Design in the near future (March 2015)

Recently, a wealth of discourses is proposing design as a discipline capable of bridging the gap between academic research and everyday applications, innovation theories and companies’ capacities, cultural mixes and society/citizenship renewal. However, rather than benefiting from these interests, design is often squeezed into too many faulty statistics and incomplete reports, that make the disciplinary field increasingly slippery. Design is infinitely expanding its interests: from products to services, systems, cultures, strategies, citizenship, and so on. Issues are requiring further investigation, while the complexity and the turbulence of the actual socio-economical system are seeking a clearer disciplinary focus, that could easily communicate design to all potentially interested parties – from companies to policy makers, and citizens.
How can we map the contemporary/future practices of design?
Which are the important shifts to be proposed/envisaged in design education?
Which topics are relevant for current design PhD paths?
What would a European perspective on this disciplinary shift look like?

The book seeks to explore the changing role of design within contemporary culture and the meaning/existence of a European Design – linked to the emerging emphasis upon new skill sets and professional roles, the development of innovative methods and tools, future materials, and the impact of digital technologies and data sets. Design and the role of the designer shift to occur within a trans-disciplinary, multi-institutional and global context. In the coming years designers will work alongside social entrepreneurs, scientists and policy makers, just as readily as manufacturers or technologists.
Is design still the solving of existing problems or is it transforming into an epistemological practice, future-focused and knowledge generating?

The book seeks to stimulate dialogue across the traditional design disciplines and beyond, to investigate and question the nature of European Design in the near future.

This book is soliciting chapter proposals from a multidisciplinary array of scholars to investigate how each perspective in design and other connected areas are impacting design research, practice, and education.
Contributions are welcome on, but not limited to:

. Design and sociology
. Product/service systems design

Schedule for publication:
. A declaration of interest of max 1000 words should be sent to and by 2 March 2015
. Notification of accepted proposals: 3 April 2015
. First draft deadline: 31 July 2015
. Final version deadline: 30 October 2015
. Publication: December 2015
. Submit your proposal by Microsoft Word email attachment. We would most appreciate proposals that outline the structure and original contribution of the chapter, identifying theoretic and empirical approaches used and selected topics coming from the call.
Please, include as a separate file a brief biography covering your current institutional affiliation and position and a selected list of relevant publications and any other pertinent information on your qualifications for contributing to this volume.
