Deadline for submissions: 15 May 2015 (for papers), 28 February 2015 (for workshops)

The promise of cognitive innovation as a collaborative project in the sciences, arts and humanities is that we can approach creativity as a bootstrapping cognitive process in which the energies that shape the poem are necessarily indistinguishable from those that shape the poet. For the purposes of this conference the exploration of the idea of cognitive innovation concerns an understanding of creativity that is not exclusively concerned with conscious human thought and action but also as intrinsic to our cognitive development. As a consequence, we see the possibility for cognitive innovation to provide a theoretical and practical platform from which to address disciplinary differences in ways that offer new topics and concerns for research in the sciences and the humanities.

Chapter Proposals for Heritage as a path to innovation: a reflection on European Design in the near future (March 2015)

Website: http://www.masterofeuropeandesign.com/
Deadline for submission of notice of interest: 2 March 2015

Recently, a wealth of discourses is proposing design as a discipline capable of bridging the gap between academic research and everyday applications, innovation theories and companies’ capacities, cultural mixes and society/citizenship renewal. However, rather than benefiting from these interests, design is often squeezed into too many faulty statistics and incomplete reports, that make the disciplinary field increasingly slippery. Design is infinitely expanding its interests: from products to services, systems, cultures, strategies, citizenship, and so on. Issues are requiring further investigation, while the complexity and the turbulence of the actual socio-economical system are seeking a clearer disciplinary focus, that could easily communicate design to all potentially interested parties – from companies to policy makers, and citizens.
How can we map the contemporary/future practices of design?
Which are the important shifts to be proposed/envisaged in design education?
Which topics are relevant for current design PhD paths?
What would a European perspective on this disciplinary shift look like?

NordDesign 2014 (August 2014, Espoo Finland)

Website: http://www.norddesign2014.fi/
Deadline for submissions: UPDATED 28 February 2014
In the area of innovation, design and product development we quite often seem to know that something works in practice, but might lack understanding on the theoretical foundations. Many of the topical issues related to design, development, and innovation that seem to be regarded as “common knowledge” within the industry, are insufficiently founded from the theoretical perspective. On the other hand, results of academic research are often insufficiently disseminated to the industry.

We are calling for evidence-based academic work on topical issues on design, product development and innovation that strengthens both our theoretical understanding, and the connection between theory and practice.
