Technologies of visualization are a well-established matter of concern to STS scholars interested in questions of knowledge production and representation (Hacking 1983, Latour and Woolgar 1986, Latour 1990, Kaiser 2005). Recent work extends this consideration to acoustic technologies (Helmreich 2007, Pinch and Bijsterveld 2004, Roosth 2009). This panel opens an adjacent conversation in relation to the use of digital and analog media in the design processes of fields such as industrial design, architecture, planning, engineering, and visual communication design. Here the issues are less about constituting pattern, order, and meaning from scientific data, with the digital/analog question instead highlighting issues of translatability, or “transductivity” (Helmreich 2007, Silverstein 2003) across representational mediums, and in relation to problems of scale and complexity. It also bears on professional debates on craft, making, and aesthetics.

Expressions of Interest close on 30 April 2015. For contributors invited to submit papers, the deadline for full papers is 30 June 2015. c+de#8 will be published in mid-2016.

Unmaking Waste:  Transforming Production and Consumption in Time and Place (May 2015, Adelaide Australia)

Waste is created when we no longer value something we create, possess or use. Barriers to prematurely discarding goods and resources have steadily fallen in recent years. Easy credit, low prices, instant online access, and a 24 hour promotional media all reinforce an expanding consumerism.

While much effort has gone into researching and implementing successful technical strategies for reducing waste and emissions, accelerating rates of consumption are undermining these efforts. It is clear that we need new systems-based approaches to reduce this excess consumption, including the excesses of our ‘waste-making’, to generate a more sustainable circular economy.

This conference invites participants to explore new approaches to reduce the speed, volume and impacts of ‘waste-ready’ global consumerism.

The digital crafters in the Autonomatic Research Group at Falmouth University invite you to join them in critical debate about a radically transformed vision of 21st century production. In this brave new world of Makerspaces and Fablabs anyone can be a digital craftpreneur, harnessing the power of digital technologies to create, co-create, collaborate, make and sell.

Aimed at makers and researchers of all shapes and codes including hackers, crafters, inventors, designers, economists, curators and critical theorists, this two day conference will explore craft values, traditional making processes and novel forms of engagement, participation and interaction in digital and material cultures.

Historians and cultural critics who study objects have long focused on the relationships between production and consumption, but these dynamics deserve reexamination in today’s object-flooded world. At the same time, the concept and aesthetic of reuse is enjoying the spotlight in contemporary fashion and design, but has been employed for many years by architects, artists, and the American public as a strategy for survival as well as a political statement. This interdisciplinary experimental workshop and conference invites questions related to the core themes of production, consumption, and reuse in American history and contemporary life.
