Special Issue of Architectural Theory Review: Corruption (Aug 2015)

Website: http://explore.tandfonline.com/cfp/pgas/atr-cfp-corruption
Deadline for submissions: 30 March 2015

Special Issue: Corruption
Editor: Adam Jasper
To be published August 2015

The New York City 1916 Zoning Resolution was designed in order to ensure light reached the streets of Manhattan. It dictated massing at certain heights in a way that shaped the signature New York skyscraper up until the Second World War. In 1961, the successful example of the 1958 Seagram Plaza lead city authorities to rewrite the laws to encourage developers to create public places in exchange for extra height, and the form of the skyscraper changed again. Inside the building, the appearance and materials of office furniture also transformed in response to accelerations in tax depreciation. The privately owned public spaces that Seagram Plaza engendered include Zuccotti Park, that—thanks to ambiguities regarding police responsibilities—became the site of the 2011 Occupy Wall Street protests. According to the New York Times, in 2012 the Seagram Building had the lowest energy star rating of any structure in New York (at three out of a hundred), making it now illegal to build. Rules, whether adhered to or circumvented, shape cities.

TOURETTE_Journal#0: WideOpen Call for Calls (22 June 2014)

Call for Calls

Call for Calls

Website: tourette-journal.tumblr.com

Deadline: 22 June 2014

Eligibility: Anybody is eligible. Authors may have a non-architectural background, but the call must fuel innovative debate within contemporary architectural discourse. Group submissions are allowed.

TOURETTE_journal looks at architecture as a loose and ever-changing discipline, dealing with everything spatial directly and by way of digital culture, shifting institutional ground, political and sociological issues, representational modes, drones and gorillas. Tourette recognizes the power of architectural discourse in the shaping of the discipline and the profession, and wishes to provide an open platform for the proliferating of ideas, debate and disagreement on issues related to the project of architecture in contemporary culture.

CALL: WIDEOPEN: Call for Calls offers winning applicants the opportunity to curate one issue of the journal and contribute to the all-too-contemporary quest for relevancy within architectural discourse. At a time of collective and disciplinary crisis, in which architecture is looking outside of itself in order to redefine its boundaries, WIDEOPEN looks for intriguing questions rather than easy answers, challenging doubts rather than soothing certainties. WIDEOPEN challenges issues of authoriality within the discipline by soliciting a collective effort and foregrounding participation. The first issue of the journal, gathering the collection of accepted calls, will read as a crowd sourced manifesto of contemporary architecture. The whole structure of the journal will revolve around this first issue, expanding it and implementing its scope.

THEMES: Submitted call for papers will deal with one of the following macrothemes/tagwords, expanding it, stretching it and counterubbing it in any way possible. The tagwords are intended to cover some significant moments in the process of design, but are intentionally ambiguous so as to encourage the most diverse interpretations of them:

.Prophecy

.Actors

.Representation

.Matter

.Machine

.Fate

Dates: 27-29 August 2014
Location: Aalto University Design Factory, Espoo, Finland
Website: http://www.norddesign2014.fi/
Deadline for submissions: UPDATED 28 February 2014
In the area of innovation, design and product development we quite often seem to know that something works in practice, but might lack understanding on the theoretical foundations. Many of the topical issues related to design, development, and innovation that seem to be regarded as “common knowledge” within the industry, are insufficiently founded from the theoretical perspective. On the other hand, results of academic research are often insufficiently disseminated to the industry.

We are calling for evidence-based academic work on topical issues on design, product development and innovation that strengthens both our theoretical understanding, and the connection between theory and practice.

Special Issue of Architecture Theory Review: theories of colour (Dec 2013)

Website: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ratr
Deadline for submissions: 31 December 2013

In 1927, Bruno Taut built himself a house in the south of Berlin. The house was a richly coloured affair, with a range of colours for walls and furniture. Those areas of the house that received indirect light were decked out with the brightest tones. The ceiling of the living room was a radiant red, designed to act as an inverse to the green of nearby meadows. Even the radiator and its pipes were set out from the wall and distinguished from their surroundings with contrasting colours. This polychromatic exuberance was typical of Taut, and of early modernism.
