Modular Robotis cubelets Packaging Design Competition (Apr 2011)

Deadline: 15 April 2011

Modular Robotics is getting ready to launch the first Cubelets kits, and the product deserves a brilliant, sustainable, and thoughtful packaging design.  We’ve only been out of school for a couple of years and we know that the best work comes from hungry, motivated designers who aren’t stuck in a corporate rut.  So, a competition.  Design the packaging for our Cubelets Standard Kit, and enter your design to win prize money and recognition.

Guidelines

Here is a one-minute video we just put together of some prototypes.  Cubelets will be used by children, but they’re not a toy. Cubelets are a robot construction kit that can serve as a model for people to build complex systems, and hopefully gain new insights into the world around them.  The packaging is not just for sitting on a store shelf; we imagine that people will store their Cubelets in the package when they’re not playing with them.  The packaging must be as sustainable as possible.  Although we’re doing everything we can to minimize the environmental impacts of Cubelets, we still feel a little guilty about making plastic toys.  We love recycled materials.  We love innovative.  We dislike white-on-white Apple-style.  We love saturated colors.  The packaging design is more than just graphics, there is a structural challenge as well: the Cubelets Standard Kit weighs 2.2 lbs.  Winning entries will clearly address the materials and construction of the physical package.  Here is a drawing of the twenty block kit with some dimensions.

Rules

Submissions must be received at Modular Robotics by Friday, April 15 at 5:00pm MST.  Submissions can take any form including renderings, physical mock-ups, cardboard sculptures, interpretive dance videos, etc.  Email submissions to: pkg@modrobotics.com or send them via any carrier to: Modular Robotics, ATTN: PKG, 2500 Pearl Street #310, Boulder, CO 80302, USA.  The submissions will be judged by a panel of three expert designers shortly after the submission deadline.  You will be notified via email and the winning entries will be posted on our blog.  Modular Robotics will own all rights to submitted designs.

Prizes

1st place: US$1000 + 1 Cubelets Standard Kit

  2. Ii is really good to know that Modular Robotics is getting ready to launch the first Cubelets kits. Here I also enjoyed the one minute video on prototypes defined by it. And above all that I found the prices are reasonable for both the kits.
