This conference seeks to activate three conversational platforms embedded in the conference title.

1) Design Education as Interface
2) Design Education as Diverse Cultural and Social Space
3) Design Education as Politics.

The conference will explore the idea that graphic design education is rapidly evolving: the social spaces we work in, and the practices of teaching and learning we engage with, are themselves mediated by larger contexts of social, cultural, political and technological change. Mindful of these changing contexts our conference will seek to pose questions about the assumptions we make about the relationship between making design, thinking about design, asking questions about design and theorizing design in as open and potentially interdisciplinary a framework as possible.

We will also address how, as a specific discipline of making, we are uniquely placed to explore the limits of the emerging conversation about visual communication and visual culture in contemporary spaces of learning.

Closed Systems / Open Worlds (August 2014)

Contact:  ClosedandOpenBook@gmail.com
Deadline for précis: 1 August 2014

Edited by: Jeremy Hunsinger (Wilfrid Laurier University), Jason Nolan (Ryerson University) & Melanie McBride (York University)

This book will consist of explorations at the boundaries of virtual worlds as enclosed but encouraging spaces for exploration, learning, and enculturation. Game/worlds like Second Life, OpenSim, Minecraft, and Cloud Party are providing spaces for the construction of alternatives and reimaginings, though frequently they end up more as reproductions. We seek to challenge those spaces and their creativities and imaginings.

Intl J of Designs for Learning: Special Issue on Designs of Spaces for Learning (June 2013)

Theme: Designs of Spaces for Learning
Website: http://scholarworks.iu.edu/journals/index.php/ijdl/
Deadline for submissions: 1 June 2013

Environments for learning take diverse forms and include schools, colleges and universities, libraries, museums, and also virtual spaces where learning occurs.  Creating these spaces involves complex decision-making and significant process of thought and planning. You are invited to share your knowledge in an article to be published by the International Journal of Designs for Learning that describes your professional experiences in designing a space where knowledge is imparted and lives changed.

ICHSL.8: 8th International Conference on Human System Learning (Dec 2012, Paris)

Theme: Augmented learning: corporality, interference and temporality in knowledge acquisition and transmission
Dates: 4-5 December 2012
Location: Site Universitaire de Gennevilliers, Paris, France
Website: http://ICHSL.net The website appears UP again
Deadline for submissions: 30 September 2012

It is now obvious that the evolution of technologies has largely impacted human activities, the ICHSL conference focuses accordingly, and for 15 years and through 8 editions, with the human/system learning processes. This multidisciplinary approach raises the question of Teaching Media related to both “Data and knowledge” processing, production and acquisition.  ICHSL.8 is interested in questioning, modeling and describing the environments (systems), the technical factors as well as the practices that take part during training and learning activities. By taking into account that intelligence is shared between the learners and the teaching devices, it is thus possible to consider that both human and learning media can be considered as “learner”.
